California Pension Service Building

California Pension Service Building

Location

California Pension Service (Calpers) Building Sacremento, California USA.

Specifications

To provide efficient drainage under 10,000 m2 of landscaped areas positioned over underground parking areas, to withstand the weight of onsite mechanical equipment, during the installation of soil mix and to bear the weight of large tree plantings.

Solution

VersiCell interlocking panels were positioned directly onto the waterproofing membrane, providing membrane protection and covered with geotextile. Planting media was positioned on the geotextile and turf and plant species installed. VersiCell, unlike cuspated drainage sheets, when covered with a minimum 100mm of soil mix, withstands the weight of bobcats and other mechanical equipment during the installation of soil mix. VersiCell also resists the weight of large newly established and mature tree species. VersiCell is three times more efficient than dimpled drainage sheets in capturing and transporting sub-surface water and does not suffer from severe restriction, caused by geotextile sagging between dimples, in cuspated drainage sheets.

Under Playground Water Storage

Location

Kilbreda College Mentone Victoria.

Specifications

To provide 200,000 litres of water storage under a sports field area for storm water captured from roof and playground areas and to allow the captured water to be used to irrigate playing fields.

Solution

VersiTank 840 Plus modules were assembled and positioned in an excavated area and enveloped with a sandwich containing an inner layer of geotextile, a low density polyethylene inner impermeable liner and an outer geotextile layer. The installed modules were then covered with a 500mm layer of compacted soil mix and then planted with turf. Storm water from the school roofs and hard surface areas passes into designated leaf and silt traps prior to entering the tanking system. The clean water is used to irrigate large areas of playing fields and the system withstands the weight of maintenance equipment.

The collaborative project, that actively involved college students, resulted in Chadoak Plumbing and Drainage, winning the Green Plumbers Commercial Plumbers Project of the Year Award .

Punggol Waterfront Promenade

Location

Punggol Waterfront Promenade.

Specifications

The Punggol Waterfront Promenade is part of the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s (URA) Parks and Waterbodies and Identity Plans. In the plans, the coastal and waterfront areas of Punggol are envisaged as a recreational and leisure destination for the residents in the North-east of Singapore. It will provide seamless public access to the entire Punggol waterfront and serve as a recreation corridor to support future waterfront housing and a range of recreation developments.

The waterfront promenade comprises three segments: the Punggol Point Walk, a 1.2km promenade; Nature Walk, a 2.4km nature trail; and Riverside Walk, a 1.3km promenade along Sungei Serangoon.

The 4.9km promenade, including a 0.6-ha park at Punggol Point, will link the proposed sports and recreational clusters in Punggol Point and Sungei Serangoon and park connectors along the Punggol and Serangoon rivers.

Envisioned as a promenade with kampong-style seaside charm, it allows visitors to walk the entire stretch of the Punggol coastline and to savour the natural rustic charm. It is designed with exercise stations, bicycle and jogging tracks, facilities for sea sport activities, alfresco dining, as well as a horse-riding centre. There are also lookout points at the tiered boardwalk that allow visitors to get closer to the water’s edge, bringing residents and visitors closer to nature.

The waterfront promenade enhances the living environment and will make a big difference to quality of life of residents in this area.

Solution

VersiTank® by Elmich Pte Ltd is used in the park for stormwater infiltration by positioning them in excavated pits and then enveloping the tanks with geotextile filter fabric. Layers of sand and aggregate are then placed above and topped with a final sand layer to create a “dry pond” feature. Solids, including mud and clay, in the water are filtered out as it readily passes into the tank. Water in the tank then infiltrates into the surrounding substrate or discharges via overflow pipes into the drainage system, preventing water-logging and or ponding where the tanks are installed.

VersiTank® stormwater management system reduces the peak rate and total volume of stormwater runoff, as well as the amount of suspended solids and pollutants in stormwater runoff from the playground and exercise station.

Aboveground, particulates and their associated pollutants are filtered as runoff passes slowly and evenly through into the tank. Belowground, pollutants slowly infiltrate into and are then incorporated into the soil where they may be immobilized and/or decomposed by plants and microbes.

Acting as a stormwater infiltration and detention facility, the system is a cost-effective way to control water runoff, improve water quality, mitigate downstream flooding, and enhance the aesthetics of the promenade and park.
